Definition of Tonic:

A restorative (restores or renew strength or vitality) which improve the tone of specific tissues, restoring energy and strength to the entire debilitated system, by imperceptibly stimulating vital functions [Culbreth1927, pg 38].

Tonics are those medicines which increase the tone or healthy action, or strength of the living system [Brown1878; Meyer1932].

A remedy that restores tone to a system; seen as essentially nourishing, supportive, and restorative with a sure, long lasting effect [Sanchez BOTM680].

Tone (full body adaptogen) tissue, supportive and nutritive for all body systems, memory, vitality, mental abilities. Some tonics have affinity for particular systems (hawthorn- tones heart). Have to take for a long period of time and have a long term benefit. [Palmer2004].
